I’m getting increasingly frustrated with how smart home tech is marketed. Everything is presented as seamless and intuitive, but the reality is often far from it. For example, that “effortlessly control your home with your voice” promise? Turns into yelling the same command three times before the lights finally dim.
Anyone else feel like there’s a huge gap between the marketing and the actual user experience? I recently bought a smart thermostat that was advertised as “learning your habits and saving you money automatically,” but I’ve spent more time tweaking its settings than I ever did with my old dumb one! It feels like I’m constantly fighting with the app, and I’m not sure I’m saving any money at all.
What are some of the most egregious examples of unrealistic smart home marketing you’ve encountered? And what do you think can be done to make the industry more honest about the challenges of creating a truly seamless smart home experience? I’m starting to think the “smart” part is often just adding complexity without real benefit.
