I’ve been noticing a trend lately, and I’m wondering if anyone else feels the same. It seems like adventure sports, like climbing, surfing, and even backcountry skiing, are becoming less about the adventure and more about the gear and the image. You see more influencers pushing expensive equipment, perfectly curated Instagram feeds showcasing exotic locations (that are now overrun with tourists), and less emphasis on actual skill and respect for the habitat.
Is this commercialization ultimately diluting the spirit of these sports? Are we losing the authentic connection to nature and the personal challenge in favor of chasing likes and buying the latest gadgets? I remember when a simple setup and a thirst for adventure were all you needed. Now it feels like there’s pressure to have the newest board, the fanciest harness, and a drone to capture the perfect shot. Maybe its always been this way to some extent, but it feels like it’s accelerating. Thoughts?
