I’ve always found the distinction between minimalist and modernist styles a bit fuzzy, and I’m curious if others have too. A simple way I’ve started too think about it is that modernism is about the era and the embrace of new materials and technologies (think open floor plans and lots of glass), while minimalism is more of an aesthetic choice focused on stripping things down to their essential form and function.
So, you could have a modern home that incorporates minimalist design elements, or a minimalist space in a more traditional building. It’s not necessarily an either/or situation.I think a good example is comparing a classic Eames chair (modernist) to a simple wooden stool (minimalist). Both are functional seating, but the chair embodies a specific era’s approach to materials and manufacturing, whereas the stool is purely about simple form.
Does this resonate with anyone else’s understanding? Are there other key differences you see, or examples that help you differentiate the two? I’m genuinely trying to solidify my understanding and would love to hear other perspectives.
