It feels like every time a new artistic trend pops up – whether it’s a specific type of painting, a digital art style, or even a craft craze – it unintentionally leaves out people with disabilities. I’m not saying it’s intentional, but accessibility frequently enough seems like an afterthought, if it’s considered at all.
Think about the popular pour painting trend a few years back. Amazing visually, but requiring very fine motor skills and control over pouring liquids. Or those intricate papercutting crafts that demand perfect vision and hand steadiness. even things like digital art challenges can be inaccessible if the prompts rely heavily on specific movement or visual cues without providing alternatives.
Why is this so common? Is it simply a lack of awareness,or is there a deeper problem with how we think about art and creativity? How can we push for more inclusive artistic spaces and trends that allow everyone to participate and express themselves, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities? What simple adjustments could make a big difference? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
