So, I’ve been diving deep into creating murals lately, specifically focusing on a style I’m calling “Artistic Whims” – think playful, imaginative, and a little surreal. It’s been a huge learning curve, and I wanted to share some of the biggest takeaways so far.
First, prep is EVERYTHING. I initially underestimated how much time and effort needs to go into properly prepping the wall surface. I used to rush it, and it always came back to bite me with peeling paint or uneven textures later.Now I spend almost as much time prepping as I do painting! Secondly, don’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques and tools. I started with basic brushes and rollers, but I’ve since incorporated stencils, spray paint, and even projectors to create different effects and speed up the process.
and maybe most importantly, be open to collaboration and feedback. I’ve had some amazing brainstorming sessions with clients and other artists that have wholly changed the direction of a mural for the better. it’s easy to get caught up in your own vision, but sometimes a fresh perspective is exactly what you need.What are some mural-making lessons you’ve learned in your own artistic journeys?
