I’ve been thinking a lot about how virtual reality could reshape adventure sports training in the coming years. Imagine avalanche safety courses being conducted in realistically simulated environments, allowing trainees to practice rescue techniques under pressure without any actual risk. We could also see rock climbers perfecting routes in VR before ever touching real rock, focusing on technique and strategy without fatigue or fear of falling.
It seems like VR has the potential to considerably reduce the learning curve and improve safety in these high-risk activities. What are your thoughts on the limitations of VR training? Is it possible to truly replicate the feeling of wind on your face while skiing, or the fear of heights while climbing? And how will it impact access to these sports, by lowering the bar for entry or creating a divide based on access to VR technology? I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks about the future impact.
