ELI5: What Makes a Piece of Clothing ‘Minimalist’?

Saw an ELI5 about what makes clothing “minimalist” and it got me thinking. Is it just about color (lots of blacks, whites, and greys) or is there more to it? Does the *design* play a bigger role? I mean, a simple black t-shirt could be considered minimalist, but what about a black t-shirt with an elaborate, albeit monochromatic, geometric pattern? Does the pattern negate the minimalism?

I also wonder about the *number* of items. Can you have a minimalist wardrobe if you own, say, twenty similar black t-shirts? Or does minimalist clothing imply owning only a few, high-quality versatile pieces? Functionality seems to be part of it too. A minimalist piece is probably practical and can be worn in multiple situations. What are your thoughts on the core pillars of minimalist clothing?
