I gotta say, sometimes I feel like a lot of art gets a free pass just because it’s *weird*. Like, there’s a difference between challenging conventions and just throwing random stuff together and calling it profound. I saw a piece the other day that was literally just a painted banana duct-taped to a wall. The artist’s statement was all about existentialism and the fleeting nature of life. Maybe I’m just not sophisticated enough, but it felt like they were retroactively applying meaning to somthing entirely arbitrary.
is there a point where artistic freedom crosses the line into being deliberately obtuse? I’m all for pushing boundaries, but when the emperor has no clothes, shouldn’t someone say something? I’m not sure what differentiates genuine artistic expression from performative absurdity designed to fleece the art world. Anyone else feel this way? Or am I just missing the point of modern art altogether?
