I’ve been thinking lately about how much (or how little) dressing well actually impacts career progression in finance. It seems like the old “dress for the job you want” adage is still floating around, but is it genuinely relevant in today’s environment?
I’m in a role at a fairly traditional investment bank, adn while it’s not explicitly stated, there’s definitely an unspoken expectation. Think well-fitted suits for men, and tailored separates or dresses for women. First impressions matter, especially when you’re meeting with clients or senior management. I’ve seen colleagues get subtle feedback (frequently enough delivered indirect) about their attire not being quite “up to par.”
However, I also see some people who seem to prioritize substance over style and still advance, so I’m curious: How much weight do you all think firms *really* place on appearance these days? Does it depend on the specific role (front office vs. back office, for example)? And has anyone experienced a situation where their clothing genuinely helped or hindered their career trajectory? Interested to hear different perspectives across various finance roles.
