I’ve been thinking a lot lately about smart home automation, and I’m starting to wonder if we’re making it way more complicated than it needs to be. It feels like everyone is chasing these elaborate, interconnected systems with a million sensors and IFTTT recipes. But is that really necessary for most people?
I see friends constantly troubleshooting issues with their complex setups, spending hours getting things to work only to have it break again a week later. Simultaneously occurring, I’m over here perfectly happy with a few smart lights that turn on at sunset and a voice-controlled thermostat. My energy bills are lower, and I spend way less time fiddling with settings.
Maybe the core of smart home tech should be simple, reliable convenience rather than striving for some futuristic, fully automated experience. What do you guys think? Are we chasing a level of automation that’s more trouble than it’s worth?
