I’ve been seeing a lot of rants lately about how minimalism, wich started as a rejection of consumerism, feels like it’s become its own kind of rigid box. It’s almost like needing a capsule wardrobe of onyl neutral-toned items from a specific influencer-approved store is just trading one type of consumer pressure for another, more subtly marketed one. Rather of chasing the latest fast fashion, you’re chasing the perfectly curated, “minimalist” aesthetic.
Does anyone else feel this way? I wonder at what point a personal ideology designed to free you from material possessions transforms into a lifestyle you feel pressured to maintain to fit in with a certain online crowd. Are we actually decluttering our lives, or just reorganizing our anxieties into a more aesthetically pleasing package? And is there a way to actually embrace minimalism without falling into this trap – focusing more on the core values and less on the specific, trendy presentation?
