Something I’ve been pondering lately is the ethical balance within minimalist fashion: is it more ethical to buy new, sustainably produced minimalist pieces, or to stick exclusively to secondhand clothing? On one hand, supporting brands that prioritize fair labor and eco-pleasant materials seems like the right thing to do. You’re investing in a garment that will (hopefully) last a long time and you’re contributing to a more responsible fashion industry.
Though, buying anything new contributes to consumption, even if it’s “sustainable.” The secondhand market already exists, giving perfectly good clothes a second life.Buying used avoids the environmental impact of producing something new, and it can be substantially cheaper, making minimalist style more accessible.
Where I get tripped up is when considering the longevity of garments. A well-made, new minimalist item from a sustainable brand might last for years, perhaps replacing several cheaper, less durable secondhand items in the long run. But then again, finding exceptionally well-made, durable pieces secondhand is possible with some effort. Does the initial environmental “cost” of producing a sustainable new item outweigh the potential waste of constantly replacing cheaper, less durable secondhand finds over time? What’s everyone else’s take on this?
