Dealing with negative self-talk during ultra trail runs is a real struggle. You’re out there for hours, physically and mentally exhausted, and the inner critic starts screaming. I’ve found a few things that help, but I’m curious what works for others. For me,pre-race mantras are crucial.Somthing short, positive, and specific to the race or the anticipated challenges. Also, focusing on concrete, achievable goals during low moments. Instead of thinking “I have 30 miles left!”, I break it down to “Just get to the next aid station.” Sometimes even smaller: “Just put one foot in front of the other.”
Another trick I’ve found helpful is acknowledging the negativity without dwelling on it. Instead of fighting the thought “I can’t do this,” I consciously think, “Okay, brain, you’re giving me the ‘I can’t’ thought. Thanks for the input. Moving on.” It sounds silly, but it helps me detach from the emotion and refocus. What are some of your go-to techniques for banishing the gremlins during those ultra-long runs? any mental strategies or specific phrases you find particularly effective?
