Has anyone else been reading up on building supportive communities centered around outdoor mental wellness? I’ve seen a few “complete guides” floating around lately, and while the general advice is great (nature is good, connection is good, duh!),I’m curious about the practical request.
Specifically, I’m wondering how people handle the inherent safety concerns. Hiking in a group is safer than solo, sure, but what about group dynamics when someone is struggling? Are there best practices for de-escalating a panic attack on a trail, or discreetly offering support to someone who’s feeling overwhelmed by anxiety a few miles from the trailhead?
Also, how do you foster genuine connection in these groups? A shared walk in the woods is a nice start, but making it meaningful feels like it requires more intentionality. Are there activities or conversation starters that people have found particularly useful for building trust and encouraging vulnerability in an outdoor setting without feeling forced or performative? I’d love to hear your experiences.
